Our knowledgeable staff here at Garden-Ville are available to answer many of the questions you might have about gardens, landscaping, and trees. Many problems with plants, however, cannot be responsibly diagnosed other than in person. We're located in central Texas and may not be familiar with the details of gardening in very different climate or soil zones. One of the guiding principles of organic growing is adapting methods to the particularites of local soil and climate. With that in mind we'll do our best to answer your question, but if we can't we'll be happy to help you find the appropriate resources or professionals in your area.

  • We live on the guadalupe river north of Bergheim. We have about an acre, of which about a half acre is on the river bottom land. How can we control the chiggers both on the ground and what can we do when they are on us? Thank you!

    Garden-Ville Organic Insecticide, Insect Control

To control chiggers you can either use the Garden-Ville Organic Insect Control or the Anti Fuego. The Organic Insect Control is a relatively new product here at Garden-Ville, it is a mixture of limestone powder and mint oil that acts to clog the insects breathing holes and paralyze them causing them to basically suffocate. It is non toxic to people and pets and can be applied as a powder or a liquid. The Anti Fuego is a product that Garden-Ville has had for some time now, it is a mixture of liquid humate, molasses, and orange oil. Our customers swear by this stuff they tell us that they use it at a rate of 4 ounces per gallon of water and spray it through their hose end sprayer to get rid of chiggers, fleas, ticks, and other bugs. There is another product that you can buy that will also get rid of the chiggers, dusting sulfur. If you spread the dusting sulfur out it will take care of your chigger problem, but you need to be careful about anyone that has an allergy to sulfur since it is in a dust form. To keep them off you I would suggest you try Cedar Cide's Personal Insect Repellant. It is made of cedar oil which is a natural insect repellent and is safe to use.
